The 2026 Peculiar People’s Soccer League (PPSL) kicked off in grand style on Match Day 1, as players moved from indoor games to the outdoor field, ready to make their mark under regular soccer rules.
The opening match between Team Grace and Team Joy began with both teams gathering at centre field, where referee Temofe Akaba invited them together for a prayer session led by the Planning Committee.
Team Grace started brightly and set the tone early, putting pressure on Team Joy’s goalkeeper, Cadan Mang, who made several good saves. Unfortunately, he suffered a nose injury after a collision with a Team Grace player, which may have slowed him down. However, that takes nothing away from the brilliance of Team Grace’s opening goal. Daniel Emakpose struck a beautiful shot from outside the 18-yard box, from the far right, curling the ball into the corner of the far post.
The goal drew immediate reactions from fans, with some commenting, “This Grace team is too strong.”
Charles Omonkhegbe then came on as a substitute and scored Team Grace’s second goal with a sharp, darting finish, assisted by Daniel Emakpose. Team Joy responded with a goal from Daniel O. Chike, but the match moved beyond their reach when Bolaji Ola took his chance to score Team Grace’s third, again assisted by Emakpose. With a convincing 3–1 victory, Team Grace secured their first three points and made an early statement in the league.
The second match featured Team Peace against Team Love in a tactical battle between two experienced captains: Marvin Goodluck for Team Peace and Goke Rufai for Team Love.
Team Peace started strongly and took an early lead through Delight Baadi. They doubled their advantage after James Bamgbose smartly won a penalty, which Yinka Ibiyeye calmly converted. At 2–0, Team Peace looked comfortable and appeared to be cruising toward victory.
However, Team Love responded with a strong counter-attacking and pressing game, led by Derek Kariboye. Kariboye began the comeback with a powerful shot past Team Peace’s first-choice goalkeeper, Emmanuel Chidera.
In the second half, Kariboye again caused problems for the Team Peace defence. He got in front of Daniel Azijekwe, popularly known as Biggie, who made a clumsy challenge that forced referee Somtochukwu to award a penalty to Team Love. Kariboye stepped up and calmly converted to make it 2–2.
The drama continued when a third penalty of the game was awarded, this time to Team Peace. However, Team Love goalkeeper Ezekiel Olumide guessed correctly and made a crucial save. That moment proved decisive. Team Love pushed forward in search of a winner, and Kariboye completed his hat-trick with a brilliant effort, going around the goalkeeper before finishing to seal a remarkable 3–2 comeback win.
The final match of the day between Team Light and Team Faith kicked off at 10:30 a.m., with referee Gbenga Oni in charge. Team Faith started strongly and took an early lead through Favour Osekene, who made a cool run past two defenders on the right before striking the ball past Daniel Azijekwe, who was filling in as goalkeeper for Team Light.
In the second half, Team Faith continued to press and doubled their lead when Favour Osekene scored again to complete his brace. The goal was assisted by Darasimi Eseyin, and Team Faith looked comfortable with a 2–0 lead.
However, Team Light mounted waves of attack in the final 10 minutes and put Team Faith under serious pressure. Their persistence paid off as Femi Emmanuel scored twice to complete a dramatic 2–2 comeback. One of his goals was assisted by Osas Agho, helping Team Light rescue a valuable point from the match.
Match Week 1 delivered plenty of goals, excitement, penalties, injuries, and early signs of strong competition across the league. Many players are still finding their rhythm, and PPSL fans will be watching closely to see how fitness, teamwork, and momentum develop in the coming weeks.
The Player of Match Week 1 is Derek Kariboye, whose hat-trick inspired Team Love’s dramatic comeback victory over Team Peace. Other outstanding performers included Daniel Emakpose, who recorded one goal and two assists for Team Grace, as well as Favour Osekene and Femi Emmanuel, who both scored braces in the final match of the day.
Disciplinary records from Match Week 1 also showed three yellow cards. Godwin Oscar of Team Grace was booked for a reckless foul against Team Joy, Praise Ereku (Mbappe) of Team Love received a yellow card for a rough tackle against Team Peace, and James Bamgbose of Team Peace was cautioned for unsportsmanlike conduct against Team Love.
