Grace FC Crowned League Leaders

Grace FC Crowned League Leaders

By the time the final whistle sounded at Norseman Park on Saturday, July 4, the Peculiar Peoples Soccer League had delivered everything a football weekend could offer: a champion at the top of the table, a shake-up in the chase for second place, a tense survival fight at the bottom, and one frightening medical emergency that turned into a moving display of faith, unity and brotherhood.

Week 8 arrived under warm 20-degree weather, with the renovated Norseman Field looking lush, green and ready for battle. The pitch was described as wet and muddy in parts, but the atmosphere was bright, energetic and full of expectation. Supporters came for football. They got football, drama, emotion and testimony.

And at the centre of it all stood Grace FC, now officially crowned PPSL League Leaders.

Grace entered Matchday 8 knowing that a victory would put the title beyond doubt, and they handled the pressure like a team built for big moments. Their 2–0 win over Love FC was not always comfortable, but it was controlled, disciplined and decisive. Love FC came with ambition, pressing high and threatening through Derek Kariboye and Idris Armani, but Grace’s defensive structure remained firm and goalkeeper Sam Oyebamiji once again showed why he is regarded as one of the safest hands in the league.

The opening goal came through an unfortunate own goal by Love FC goalkeeper Ezekiel Olumide, a cruel twist in a match that had been tightly contested. Love refused to collapse and continued searching for an equalizer, but Grace absorbed the pressure and waited for their moment. That moment came when Daniel Emakpose picked out Bode Yebisi, who finished calmly to seal the 2–0 win.

“Grace did not just win today; they showed the personality of champions,” one supporter said after the match. “Even when Love pushed, Grace never panicked.”

The result moved Grace FC to 20 points from eight matches, with six wins, two draws and no defeats. In a league where every week has brought surprises, Grace have been the one constant: organized, efficient and difficult to beat. Their goal difference now stands at +9, the best in the league, and their unbeaten record tells the story of a team that has earned its place at the summit.

Behind them, however, the race is far from settled.

Joy FC made a major statement in the second match of the day, defeating Faith FC 2–0 and climbing into second place ahead of Love FC. The match kicked off at 9:25 a.m. and developed slowly at first, with both sides trying to control the midfield. Faith defended with commitment, and goalkeeper Babatunde Benjamin stood tall for long stretches, frustrating Joy’s attack with confident saves.

But the match turned in the 45th minute.

After what Faith players felt was a controversial non-call for a perceived foul on one of their defenders, Joy recovered possession in a shoulder-to-shoulder battle. The referee allowed play to continue, and Elliot Samuel quickly found Chibuzor Uzor, who broke forward with purpose and finished with composure to put Joy ahead.

It was the kind of goal that changes not only a match, but a table.

Four minutes later, Joy struck again. Daniel Onabiyi found Daniel Chike, the 2025 PPSL MVP, and Chike did what big players do in big moments. With what one match report called “sublime placement,” he guided the ball beyond the substitute goalkeeper to make it 2–0. It was Chike’s seventh goal of the season, pulling him level at the top of the Golden Boot race.

“Chike does not need many chances,” a Joy FC fan said. “Give him half a yard and he will punish you.”

Faith’s afternoon was made more difficult when goalkeeper Benjamin suffered an ankle injury and had to be substituted. Defender David Aduku stepped into goal, a brave act in difficult circumstances, but Joy had already found the rhythm and confidence they needed. The match ended at 10:34 a.m., with Joy taking all three points and an important clean sheet.

With the win, Joy FC moved to 10 points, level with Love FC but ahead on goal difference. Joy now sit second with a +2 goal difference, while Love remain third with -2. That sets up a delicious Week 9 showdown: Love FC versus Joy FC, a straight battle for second place and bragging rights.

Then came the third match: Light FC versus Peace FC.

On paper, it was already a high-stakes fixture. Peace FC needed points to escape the bottom of the table, while Light FC wanted to strengthen their playoff ambitions. But seven minutes into the match, football stopped mattering.

A Light FC player suddenly collapsed on the field, creating a frightening emergency that brought players, officials and supporters together in urgent response. The referee, Dr. Segun Hassan, immediately called 911. First aid was administered. People prayed. Others stepped in with CPR knowledge. The league report specifically recognized Abiodun Oyelami for standing firmly in prayer, and Marvin Goodluck and Patrick Emmanuel for their quick response and CPR knowledge.

Paramedics and EMS later arrived, and thankfully, the player regained consciousness, was able to speak, sit up and receive further support.

It was the most important moment of the day, not because of the score, but because it revealed the heart of the league.

“One minute we were opponents; the next minute everyone was one family,” one person at the field said. “That is what PPSL is about.”

After consultation among both teams, officials and organizers, the match resumed in a shortened 30-minute non-stop format. It was no longer an ordinary football match. It was football played with gratitude.

Peace FC scored first through the in-form Yinka Ibiyeye, who calmly beat veteran goalkeeper Mr. Uche after an assist from Daniel Azijekwe, also known as Biggie. The goal was Yinka’s fourth of the season and gave Peace hope of a crucial victory.

But Light FC refused to leave empty-handed. They pushed forward and eventually found their equalizer through Femi Emmanuel, who finished calmly after a fine assist from Mayowa. The goal brought Light back into the match and added another twist to the Golden Boot race, as Femi also moved to seven goals for the season.

The match finished 1–1. Peace gained a point, but not enough to climb above the danger zone. Light also gained a point, but missed the chance to close the gap on the teams above them.

The current standings now show Grace FC far ahead at the top with 20 points. Joy FC and Love FC are tied on 10 points, with Joy in second place on goal difference. Light FC sit fourth with eight points, while Peace FC and Faith FC remain level on seven points at the bottom, separated only by goal difference. Peace have -2, while Faith sit sixth with -3.

The disciplinary report was light but significant. Kanni Omogbehin of Grace FC was booked for a reckless tackle, as was Idris Armani of Love FC. John Olalekan of Light FC received a yellow card for dissent after shouting at the referee. Kanni’s booking was his third of the season, meaning he will miss Week 9. John Olalekan, Sope Success of Peace FC and Ibrahim Saidi of Love FC are each now on two yellow cards, placing them one caution away from automatic suspension.

The Golden Boot race is now beautifully dangerous. Derek Kariboye of Love FC, Daniel Chike of Joy FC and Femi Emmanuel of Light FC all sit on seven goals. Three finishers. Three different teams. One prize. Nobody can afford to blink.

The assist race is just as tight. Osas Agho of Light FC, James Bamgbose of Peace FC, Preston Omoruwa of Joy FC and Daniel Emakpose of Grace FC all have three assists. In a season where goals are getting harder to come by, the creators may yet decide who finishes strong.

Now all eyes turn to Week 9 on Saturday, July 11, again at Norseman Park.

Faith FC face Peace FC at 8:00 a.m. in what could be the biggest relegation survival clash of the season. Light FC then take on newly crowned League Leaders Grace FC at 9:15 a.m., a major test for a Light side still fighting to climb the table. Finally, at 10:30 a.m., Love FC meet Joy FC in a direct battle for second place.

Grace have been crowned league leaders, but PPSL is not done speaking.

The title at the top may be settled, but the battle for second, the Golden Boot race, the playmaker crown and the survival fight are all alive.

Week 8 gave us champions. It gave us goals. It gave us controversy. It gave us courage. Most importantly, it reminded everyone that PPSL is not just a league of teams, fixtures and standings.

It is a community.

Football brought them together.

Love kept them together.

And Week 9? E go loud.
