Love Stays Unbeaten, Joy Dominates, and Peace Rises
It was another thrilling Saturday in the PP Soccer League as Matchday 8 delivered fire, finesse, and a few fierce tackles. All three games brought their own flavor, tight margins, individual brilliance, and a late penalty twist that reshuffled the mid-table scramble. The season is entering its decisive stretch, and the contenders are beginning to separate from the rest.
The opening clash between Grace FC and Love FC was as intense as expected. With top-of-the-table implications, both teams came in sharp and hungry. But in the end, it was Taiye Abdulganiyu who made the difference, scoring the lone goal that secured a gritty 1–0 win for Love FC. The match was not short on physicality, yellow cards flew for Segun Adetifa of Grace and for Love’s Afeez Akinbola and Henry Alemawor following heavy tackles. Love’s unbeaten run continues with five wins and three draws, keeping them firmly atop the standings with 18 points, while Grace slips to third with 13, edged out of second place on goal difference.
Next up, Joy FC lit up the pitch with a dominant 4–0 victory over Faith FC, showcasing perhaps their most fluid attacking performance yet. Daniel Olajubutu opened the scoring in the 8th minute with a solo effort that set the tone. Seven minutes later, Daniel Onyeakazi continued his red-hot form, finishing calmly after an assist from Charles Omonkhegbe. The second half belonged again to Onyeakazi, who added his second and Joy’s third, bringing his season tally to eight goals, firmly in the lead for the Golden Boot. The final goal came from Olajubutu once more, this time assisted by the ever-creative Marvin Goodluck. Joy’s attacking trio looked unstoppable, though not without consequence, both Miracle and Okonkwo picked up bookings for rough challenges. With the win, Joy now matches Grace at 13 points and edges into second on goal difference, while Faith FC, stuck on five points, languishes at the bottom of the table.
The final fixture of the day was a nail-biter as Peace FC edged out Light FC 2–1 in a dramatic encounter. Peace took the lead in the 16th minute through Michael, who coolly finished after a clever pass from Adefemi. Light responded before the half with Praise Ereku, nicknamed “Mbappé” by fans, equalizing after combining well with Delight Baadi. The second half remained tense until a handball in the box gave Peace a lifeline. Preston Omoruwa stepped up and converted the penalty in the 46th minute, sealing a vital win. Sesan Sopitan and Kings Ike each earned yellow cards for infractions that mirrored the game’s gritty tone. With this result, Peace leapfrogs Faith into fifth place, now sitting just one point behind Light FC, who remain fourth.
With eight rounds played, Love FC remains the only unbeaten team and continues to stretch their lead. Joy and Grace are tied on points, but Joy’s superior goal difference gives them the edge. Light, Peace, and Faith round out the bottom half, with Faith in desperate need of a late-season turnaround.
In the individual race for glory, Joy FC’s Daniel Onyeakazi continues to dominate the scoring charts with eight goals, followed by Osas of Love FC and Kariboye Derek of Faith FC, both on six. In the playmaking department, Marvin Goodluck of Joy and Samuel Elliot of Grace lead the assist charts with three each, with several others sitting just behind on two. Disciplinary-wise, Sesan Sopitan (Light), Ademola Kingiing (Peace), and Segun Adetifa (Grace) now top the caution list with three yellow cards apiece, a suspension looming if the trend continues.
